Le 29 juin 1893, le Sultan Moulay Hassan, accompagné de
son armée et de sa Cour, entreprend un long voyage de Fès
au Tafilalt et du Tafilalt à Marrakech.
Le récit de ce périple, illustré par une riche iconographie
– photographies, carnets des topographes, peintures,
manuscrits… – convie le lecteur à une aventure
passionnante dans l’espace et dans le temps. À la suite du
Sultan, figure hiératique entourée de ses armées et de son
Makhzen aux usages si stricts, on découvre la diversité des
paysages de l’intérieur du pays à travers le reportage inédit
d’un grand photographe. Le Maroc du XIXe siècle ressurgit
sous nos yeux.
Un ouvrage très documenté sur un moment important
de l’histoire du Maroc et qui, en esquissant le portrait d’un
homme hors du commun, ne néglige pas l’aspect social et la
vie au quotidien.

On June 29th 1893, Sultan Moulay Hassan, accompanied
by his army and his court, undertook a long journey from
Fez to the Tafilalt and from the Tafilalt to Marrakesh. The
story of this journey, richly illustrated with photographs,
topographers’ journals, paintings, manuscripts, etc., takes
the reader on an enthralling adventure in time and space.
As we follow the Sultan – a hieratic figure surrounded
by his retinue and his Makhzen with its very strict customs
– we discover the diversity of the inland scenery through
previously unpublished images by a talented
photographer. The Morocco of the 19th century reappears
before our eyes.
A very detailed work about a major period in
Moroccan history. It not only describes an extraordinary
man but also portrays the contemporary society and
everyday life.
