Amina Aouchar, Hamid Triki, Jean Léon l’Africain Photographie : Franco D’Alessandro   Le continent américain vient d’être découvert au moment où le dernier royaume islamique d’Europe s’effondre sous la Reconquista. L’Europe se tourne vers l’Atlantique en oubliant son passé oriental, la Méditerranée et sa composante islamique. C’est dans ce contexte extraordinaire que voit le jour, à Grenade, Al-Hassan ben Mohammed al-Wazzân. Encore enfant, lorsque sa famille quitte l’Espagne et s’installe à Fès, il connaît son premier exil. En 1518, sur le bateau qui le ramène de Constantinople, il est capturé par les Chevaliers de Saint-Jean qui l’offrent en cadeau au Pape Léon X, « à l’affût de tous les vents de l’Orient ». À Rome, le Pape le baptise Jean Léon de Médicis, mais il passera à l’histoire comme Léon l’Africain. Son œuvre la plus remarquable, Cosmographia de Affrica, attirera l’attention des intellectuels du monde entier : jamais auparavant le monde occidental n’avait eu accès à un texte sur l’Afrique écrit par un natif. Cet ouvrage propose une nouvelle biographie d’Al-Hassan al-Wazzân ainsi que les textes qu’il consacra à Fès, en hommage à sa patrie d’adoption. Une iconographie très riche réunit photographies, peintures et documents historiques.

Amina Aouchar, Hamid Triki, Johannes Leo Africanus  Photographs: Franco D’Alessandro   The American continent had just been discovered when the last Islamic kingdom collapsed under the Reconquista. Europe turned towards the Atlantic, forgetting its Oriental past, the Mediterranean and its Islamic component. This is the extraordinary context in which Al-Hassan was born in Grenada. He first knew exile as a child when his family left Spain and settled in Fez. In 1518, while sailing to Constantinople, he was captured by the Knights of St John. They offered him as a gift to Pope Leo X who was “on the lookout for all the winds of the Orient”. In Rome the Pope baptized him Johannes Leo de Medicis, but he became known to history as Leo Africanus. His most remarkable work, Cosmographia de Affrica, attracted the attention of intellectuals worldwide: never before had the western world seen a work about Africa written by one who grew up on the continent. This book offers a new biography of Al-Hassan al Wazzan as well as the writings he dedicated to Fez as a homage to his city of adoption. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, paintings and historical documents.
